Day 1: Arrive Kochi — Transfer to Munnar

Arrive at Cochin International Airport and transfer immediately to Munnar — a 3-hour scenic drive through Kerala's lowland coconut country before climbing into the misty hill ranges. Day 3: Munnar to Thekkady — Periyar Tiger Reserve Jeep Safari

Drive 3 hours from Munnar to Thekkady, home to the Periyar Tiger Reserve — one of India's premier wildlife sanctuaries. Afternoon jeep safari into the reserve — the open jeeps allow excellent wildlife viewing. Periyar hosts tigers, leopards, Asian elephants (commonly spotted), Indian bison (gaur), sambar deer, sloth bears, and over 260 species of birds. Visit a working spice garden for a guided tour of pepper, vanilla, cardamom, and cinnamon plantations. Evening Kalaripayattu martial arts demonstration (traditional Kerala martial art).

Day 4: Bamboo Rafting on Periyar Lake, Then Drive to Alleppey Houseboat

Begin with a unique bamboo rafting experience on Periyar Lake — guided by tribal expert boatmen through the dense forest fringes of the lake, spotting wildlife from the water. This is a far more intimate experience than the larger motorboat trips. After lunch, drive 4 hours to Alleppey (Alappuzha) and board your traditional Kerala houseboat for an evening cruise through the legendary backwaters. Dinner and overnight on the houseboat.

After a morning backwater cruise and houseboat check-out, drive 3 hours to Kovalam — Kerala's most famous beach destination. Check into a sea-facing beach resort. In the evening, walk to the iconic Kovalam Lighthouse Beach — the red-and-white striped lighthouse sits dramatically on a rocky promontory, and the surrounding crescent of beach with gentle waves is beautiful at sunset. Explore the beachside cafes, fresh seafood restaurants, and the local Ayurvedic massage stalls.

Spend the morning at Kovalam's beaches at leisure — swim, sunbathe, or try the gentle yoga classes many resorts offer. In the evening, attend a traditional Kathakali dance performance — Kerala's ancient classical dance theatre characterised by elaborate costumes, vivid face make-up, and mime-like storytelling depicting scenes from Hindu epics. The elaborate make-up process, which you can watch before the show, takes 2–3 hours. A truly unforgettable cultural experience.

  • Optional yoga or Ayurvedic treatment at resort
