Drive 3 hours from Munnar to Thekkady, home to the Periyar Tiger Reserve — one of India's premier wildlife sanctuaries. Afternoon jeep safari into the reserve — the open jeeps allow excellent wildlife viewing. Periyar hosts tigers, leopards, Asian elephants (commonly spotted), Indian bison (gaur), sambar deer, sloth bears, and over 260 species of birds.
