Shimla's classic sights day. Start at Jakhu Temple (2,455 m) — a sacred Hanuman temple at the summit of Jakhu Hill, reached by a forest path populated by hundreds of monkeys. The 108-foot Hanuman statue is visible from across the city. Walk to The Ridge for panoramic views, see the neo-Gothic Christ Church (1857), visit Scandal Point, and tour the magnificent Viceregal Lodge (now Indian Institute of Advanced Study) — a Tudor-style mansion that once served as the summer headquarters of the British Viceroy of India. End at Lakkar Bazaar for wooden handicraft shopping.

Drive to Kufri (2,622 m), 16 km from Shimla. Kufri Fun World offers seasonal skiing and sledding (extra charges apply). The Himalayan Nature Park is home to Himalayan brown bears, leopards, Siberian huskies, and colourful pheasants. Hire horses for a scenic ride through dense pine forests to panoramic viewpoints above the valley — the combination of pine-scented air, mountain views, and horse riding is uniquely Himalayan. Visit the Chini Bungalow viewpoint before returning to Shimla.

Drive 45 km from Shimla to Chail — a hidden gem at 2,250 m, built by the Maharaja of Patiala in 1891 after he was supposedly banished from Shimla by the British Viceroy. Visit the historic Chail Palace, now a heritage hotel, with its beautiful architecture and spectacular valley views. See the famous Chail Cricket Ground — at 2,444 m, it is believed to be the highest cricket ground in the world, built by the Maharaja for his own team. Visit the Chail Military School campus and the Kali Tibba temple. Walk through the magnificent deodar forest surrounding Chail — some trees here are over 150 years old. Return to Shimla for the last night.
